CENTRE FOR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Empowering students in their intellectual and work efforts, understanding the legal profession, encouraging personal development, acquiring communication skills, information literacy, involvement in pro bono Initiatives – are additional activities that underpin modern legal education programs. This is the practice of many prestigious universities in the US and Europe.
GOALS OF INSTITUTION
The adaptation of our study programme to the European study model is a process that also depends on continuing education opportunities for our students and professors. The Centre aims to support students and professors in their inquiring, analytical and creative approach to education and to promote an independent and responsible attitude among future lawyers. Through its activities, it promotes lifelong learning, emphasises the ethical dimension of the legal profession and facilitates the exchange of ideas and experiences.
MANNER OF ACTION
The Centre achieves its objectives through a variety of training in the form of workshops, exchange of experiences with similar centres in the country and abroad, practical activities in cooperation with non-governmental organisations, the organisation of forums and round tables, study tours and other activities. The Centre is committed to cooperation with the members of the Alumnia of the Faculty of Law in Split and other members of the University.
ACTIVITIES
I. Workshops, seminars, practical work with NGOs
In the period from 2006 to 2010, 62 workshops were held for first-year students of the Faculty, attended by more than 1,000 students. Students had the opportunity to choose one of the two workshops offered:
1. How to study and write papers / leaders: E. Bačić and mr. G. Staničić /
/ Total 4 hours of lectures + obligation to write a paper within 15 days of the workshop /
2. Civil society and advocacy skills / leader: E. Bačić + guests from practice /
/ Total 8 hours of lectures /
The workshops facilitated students' acquisition of basic paper writing skills and promoted active learning and critical thinking. Each of the workshops was evaluated by the participants.
Here are some of the opinions and comments of students who attended the workshops:
- What did I expect from the workshop?
- I expected an instructive course where I learn new things that will improve me as a person
- I expected a useful lecture on how to write term papers
- Honestly, I had no expectations from this workshop because I had higher expectations from the university and they were not met
- What did I get?
- the workshop met my expectations mainly because they did not meet the schedule
- only lectures already each student participated and had the opportunity to give their own
- standpoints
- The workshop was very useful, I got a lot of information on how to write the best possible diploma thesis
- extracurricular activities were useful for me personally in several segments: acquaintances, learning to respect others and different opinions
- I got more than expected, this is an ideal type of teaching where students can communicate, get to know each other, and I also liked the principle of teaching and the approach of the leader
- Suggestions.
- even more practical work with citizens' associations
- move exercises and workshops to the IT office
- a number of similar workshops
- I think it would be good to organize special workshops to discuss study problems
II. Study trips: introduction to state government institutions; a visit to the National and University Library; international cooperation
In the period from 2006 to 2010, the Center, in cooperation with the Student Union, participated in the organization of 6 study trips to Zagreb. Approximately 300 students had the opportunity to get acquainted with the work of: the Croatian Parliament, the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the National and University Library. Visits to the penitentiaries in Požega and Lepoglava were also organized on several occasions as part of the same trips.
